I started with a big needle, L or 8mm. The reason I suggest this is because you start by practicing and by using the bigger needle you can see the chain and the stitches more clearly than with a smaller needle.
Also, I have yarn you can practice with so don’t buy any yet, just the needle if you are at Wal Mart. When you learn the basics, knot, chain, double crochet and how to turn, then the needle size will depend on the project you are doing. It will state what needle and weight of yarn you will need.
I will look for the turtorial offered by Lion Brand yarns which is online you can look at. But of course, I will help you in person too! :9)

The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Hey there … some young ladies on Catholic Answers Forum are looking for crochet patterns for a chapel veil … can you help?
I just found your blog from tag surfing.
I use to homeschool my children, but put them in our parish school a few years ago … all of them will be going next year.
I love the idea of homeschooling … you are blessed to be able to.
God bless, Dana

Hi Dana
I have used this pattern before
http://www.kaleidesigns.com/crochet/patterns/archive/clot001.html
I was not happy with the yarn I used, too bulky, and if I make it again would use something smaller, thread maybe.
God Bless you
